From Cooktown there were 2 routes available. The more
interesting-looking one led north west through the Lakefield national
park; however it was an unmade dirt road all the way to Laura, about
140kms away, and it was unclear whether or not there would be any
supplies available on the way. So I chose to head southwest to the
town of Lakeland, some 80kms away, which in this tropical heat is
quite enough mileage for one day.
This involved retracing the last 30kms of yesterday's journey, up
and over Black Mountain again, along the Mulligan Highway:
The road flattened out after Black Mountain but the heat made it
fairly hard going. There was very little traffic along this well-made
road, and not a lot to see, apart from several creek crossings:
I arrived in Lakeland around 3pm and enjoyed a cold beer at the
town's only hotel:
The camping ground was shaded by palm trees and was a nice place
to relax and unwind. Spent most of the evening watching TV which was
dominated by the result of today's Australian election.
Distance today 83kms, total so far 369kms.
