Dunsborough to Margaret River

Thursday 8th December

The weather had improved considerably and it was sunny most of the day. The first 35kms was a loop around Cape Naturaliste, a hilly peninsula with several fine beaches:

This stretch of Australian coast was first visited by French explorers, and there is a monument to them here:

At the tip of the peninsular is an old lighthouse:

Onwards the route entered the Margaret River region, famous for its many wineries - over 150 of them. It was very tempting to stop at each one as they were all offering free tastings, however I managed to restrict myself to 5 of them, plus also a visit to the Margaret River Chocolate Factory:

It was interesting to taste these very distinctive wines, very few of which get exported overseas due to the small volumes produced in this region. The wineries were mostly in very attractive settings:

Around 6pm I arrived in Margaret River, an attractive small town set in the middle of a forest. The tree-lined main street was full of nice restaurants and bars and it was a great place to spend the evening:

Today’s distance was 107kms.
